According to research, the phrase "Keep Austin Weird" was influenced by comments made by Red Wassenich in 2000 while giving a pledge to an Austin radio station. He later on started printing decal and published a book called Keep Austin Weird: An Overview of the Odd Side of Town.

Now the expression shows the friendly, artistic, innovative and a little unusual culture that is a sanctuary for varying LGBT, intellectual, naturalist, and ecologist communities.

Austin, the state capital of Texas, is an island of blue in a sea of red. It's a liberal city in an extremely conservative state. In Austin, you'll discover boutique food, bike lanes, alternative bars, hippies, freely gay individuals, food trucks, art, and culture. It's an inviting place where anyone who likes delighted people, good food, and great music would find themselves in the house.

For 10 days last month, I spent my time in Austin attending the SXSW music, movie, and tech festival. This massive occasion is the outgrowth of what was when a small independent music festival. Now, it's a business megashow. It was my 2nd time at SXSW and my third time in Austin.

While I have actually mixed feelings on SXSW itself (I enjoy and dislike all of it at the same time), exactly what I don't have blended sensations about is Austin. I don't believe it's weird at all. I believe the rest of Texas is odd for not being more like Austin.

Which is why I love the city and do my part to keep the location "unusual." If it wasn't for that you actually do require a vehicle to travel around the city, it would be on my "I 'd move to this city" list. A few of my favorite activities are:

Cathedral of Junk

Among the genuine highlights of my whole journey was taking a look at the Cathedral of Scrap. The cathedral was built by Vince Hannemann, who relaxes while people hang out with his stuff. The Cathedral of Junk is precisely that-- a lot of scrap. There's towers of TVs, bikes, old refrigerators, tires, hubcaps, and more. I found the place terrific for families. Speaking with some residents, I found out that a great deal of individuals come here with their kids; lots of were running all over the place and having a merry time playing make-believe. Kids + junk + pretend = a simple afternoon.

Museum of the Weird

This museum located on 6th Street is a common cent game featuring weird quirks like a two-headed chicken, a "fish male," a mummy, and even a sideshow. It's one of those "step right up and see some weird shit" kind of locations. It's small, taking only 20 minutes to roam through, however it's weird, Austin-like, and sort of enjoyable. Admission is $5.

Taste of Joy

This hot sauce store serves numerous different type of hot sauces. If you like hot sauce, come here. They offer free tastings for a number of the sauces. If you wish to go nuts, attempt all the sauces on the shelves aptly formed like a coffin. They are for severe spicy addicts only.

Food Trucks

The food trucks in Austin are 2nd only to those in Portland. The South Austin Trailer Park and Eatery on S. 1st Street is really great. Certainly check that out.

Listen to music

Austin is popular for its music scene, and there are lots of chances here to pay attention to some world-class, independent music. Basically every bar in the city showcases music. The two big music celebrations in the city are Austin City Limits and SXSW.

Go to Whole Foods

Whole Foods, the across the country chain, started in Austin and the flagship shop is located here in the city. This certain shop includes a wine bar, shake bar, beer locker, roofing system terrace, huge buffet, and apparently unlimited materials of veggies, food, and in-store dining establishments. It's a food paradise, and it might be my happy location, too.

Enjoy the bats on Congress

From mid-March until November, the Congress Avenue Bridge in downtown Austin is the home of 1.5 million flying bats. Go to the waterfront at dusk to enjoy these beauties head out for their nighttime foraging.

Get drunk on 6th Street

Sixth Street is the popular street in Austin that is the home of all the bars and restaurants and offers a wild, Mardi Gras-- style atmosphere during the weekends. This is an excellent place to fulfill individuals.

Delve into Barton Springs

Barton Springs Pool is the city's main water treasure. Located in Zilker Park (see below), the natural springs supply a great reprieve from the summertime heat. If you're up to it, have a look at Hippie Hollow on Lake Travis, Austin's nudist beach.

Zilker Park

Zilker Park is in the heart of south Austin. The park offers many different kinds of outside activities such as hiking, cycling, kayaking, running, and anything else you can do in a park. Barton Springs (see above) is here too. And remember to visit the statue park.

There is a lot to do in Austin, from the strange to the mundane. The distinct and eclectic nature of the city makes it a terrific location to get hold of beer, hear some music, and people-watch for days directly. You'll find you can just be bored in this city if you attempt.
